Basics Before you Begin

The setting up a handyman business series contains four posts:

  • Basics before you begin.
  • Advertising and Marketing.
  • Administration and Communication.
  • Van layout.

A snippet of the Basics before you begin text is below. The full text is five thousand words and includes a business plan spreadsheet that you can download, as well as a video demonstration of using an excel spreadsheet.

For those starting up in business for the first time I highly recommend you read the contents of this post.

Firstly, I would like to say that if you set yourself up in business then it should be your business and you should take responsibility for any and all decisions you take. This is for me perhaps the most rewarding aspect of being self-employed, i.e. self-determination.

I do read and listen to the views of others, but at the end of the day it is up to me to disseminate this information and choose what will work best for my business.

What I have to say in this post is based on my experiences and is designed to help those of you who wish to set up a Handyman Fitting business along the same lines as the Fitting Services business I ran successfully for around fifteen years, hopefully avoiding some of the pitfalls and making you aware of some good practices.

For most people who start up in business the choice is between two ends of a spectrum which I term Evolution and Revolution.
