Planting Eucalyptus trees

I planted my first Eucalyptus trees here in Ireland early February 2018, just before the Beast from the East Storm; not great timing ๐Ÿ˜

I’ve experimented during the past six years and now have a method which is quick, affordable and assuming some TLC in the form of vegetation control, effective.

PLEASE ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป do not tease out the roots or crush the root plug. Just make a suitable size hole in the compost, hold the plug in the middle and fill / firm the root plug into the ground.

I’d still be in favour of mixing horse or cow manure into the soil, and my experience has been that it doesn’t need to be rotted down.

Eucalyptus have a reputation for being able to grow in nutrient deficient soils, though if you feel you have an issue, then a few pellets of poultry manure will help.

Shelter and Protection

It has been surprising, just how well my forest has grown despite the area being on a north facing exposed slope.
Though those trees in the shelter of the bank to the west have benefited from the protection while young and establishing.

How Far Apart ๐Ÿค”

This is down to your preference in some ways, generally for a forest tree I plant at 1m spacing staggered, with a space every third row so that you can get in easily to do vegetation clearance.

Depending on how thick a hedge / privacy screen you want, then perhaps a couple of rows 30cm apart, with the trees staggered at 50cm spacing.
